Saturday 14 th May saw the Wednesfield Foxes gather in force at the Coventry track on Hearsall common, for round 3 of the BYJL .In total there were twenty riders with Robyn Vaughan, Grace Glover pulling on the famous colours of Wednesfield for their first experience of full competitive cycle speedway and they didn’t disappoint their watching families.
On a warm ( it’s about time I hear you say) sunny afternoon the picnic blankets were out , the Wham boys ( Burtie and Glyn ) had their shades and shorts on so we knew we were in for a great afternoon of sport.
First up were once again the under 8s and under 10s who made up the bulk of the twenty riders with 11 riders in the two categories, all rider progressed to A, B, C finals. In the C final Kylan Bould, Robyn Vaughan who made a very good competitive start to cycle speedway and Heidi Williams who again had to adjust to the banked bends , Joseph Turner had pulled out of the meeting after the first few races so it was left to an all Foxes final. All three riders were now used to the dry and dusty track and also the high banked first bend but it was Kylan who burst from gate 1 to take the early lead. The two girls gave a chase but it was Kylan racing his first final who won the all foxes race, well done Kylan.
In the B final we had another three foxes with the star rider from East Park two weeks ago Joban Soori, the ever improving and speedy Logan Haddock and one of our youngest riders Ewan Turner to line up against Leicester’s Liam Wells. Well it was Liam who carried on the winning feeling from Leicester as he took first place in front of Joban who took a while to get used to the tricky conditions, a great effort from Ewan to finish third and Logan finishing just behind fourth.
The A final had foxes only rider Corey Burt, fresh from his East Park grand prix victory to fight it out with three other riders. Cory had again arrived at the start gate following yet another maximum. It’s worth saying at this stage that Boyd Haines was missing from today’s racing who may have been a little saw from a very nasty crash at Wednesfield a week or so back , hopefully Boyd is on the mend and back racing very soon. Corey lined up on gate 1 and from the second corner there was only going to be one winner and it was Corey taking his second grand prix of the season. Well done to all our under 8 riders.
Once again it wouldn’t be a BYJL meeting without mentioning Sophie Ball of East Park who made it to the A final , but what a way to celebrate her final heat win to grab that final place with a Jamie Ball fist pump and a shout of YES that her dad would have been proud of, well done Sophie.
In the U10s category all our riders earned their places in the C and B finals, we were very pleased to see Grace Glover taking part in her first BYJL races and she didn’t let herself down with a well-earned place in the C final along with the ever improving Charlotte Parfitt who once again has this natural talent for banking the bikes round the steep Coventry mbends, Grace earned a respectable send place and just pipping Charlotte into third place. Finley Burden looks to be getting back to his old self with a heat win and a B final place and was a respectable fourth earning 11pts for the team. It’s worth repeating the comment passed to Wayne on Saturday where a member from another club commented that they thought our girls (including Macey, Megan and Georgia Burt) from Wednesfield had the potential for a great future and could emulate the fantastic success of the ladies from Leicester in years to come if we can keep this group together .To be mentioned as having mthe potential is a great complement and they should all be very proud to hear such praise.
In the u12s we had Megan Burt once again reaching the A final along with another rising star of cycle speedway Sophie Sinclair Black from Leicester, Megan and Sophie look to have a great future of racing each other and long may it continue. Todd Rowley who got off to a slow start finally got win and a second place but it narrowly missed out on the A final and instead had to go in the B final, this was maybe the wakeup call he needed as he blasted the oppositions apart with some fantastic over taking to take top spot in the B final. In the U14s it was again down to the lone Fox Tyler Bould to carry the flag for the foxes and he didn’t disappoint his team mates. Tyler again got to the A final where he faced on the grid East Parks Josh Whetton, the Coventry duo of Jimmy Wassell and Ben wells .It took three re starts for the final in what can only be described as some dubious home advantage in exclusions being missed by the referee to help the Coventry pair take the first two places with Tyler finishing just in front of the ever trying Josh Whetton.
Our two Junior Girls Georgia Burt and Macey Burden again came up against tough opposition with the Leicester Girls Chloe Whitehead and Elizabeth Rigley leading most races but with the potential that they have along with East Parks popular Danielle Hickie Stokes the midlands girls certainly have a bright future, Georgia once again made the A final with Macey just missing out with a B final spot.well done girls another great experience for you. Finally it was the u17s turn to race on the tricky and by now very dusty Coventry track who had staged some excellent racing throughout the afternoon. With Alex Aris and Karl Parfitt missing due to revision commitments for some important exams this week the Foxes were still well represented with Brandon Whetton, Haydn Rowley, Adam Tipton and Kyle Ryan. As always the racing was fast and at a ferocious pace with Brandon again beating all in front of him with a 16 point maximum as he made his way to the A final. Race of the day included Haydn Rowley and East Parks Jake White with them both showing that the skid kids weren’t just around in the 50s they are well and truly on the scene today with some exceptional bike handling but it was Jake who won the heat by beating Haydn on the line by half a tyres width, it was that close. Adam Tipton thought he had reached his first BYJL A final only to have his hopes dashed by being moved into the B final due to count back with Kyle Ryan. Adam and Kyle both deserved their places on the grid as they both gave their all. Adam went on to win his B final to bring home the points for Wednesfeild Foxes who were again out and out clear club winners on the day. The A final was again won by Brandon Whetton making it two grand prix final wins this season and Haydn winning his grand prix earlier in the season , Kyle came in a spirited 4 th place .
A fantastic days racing with all riders representing Wednesfield Foxes with great pride , sportsman ship and commitment but most of all a big smile on their faces. The next Round is Saturday 4 th June at Wednesfield so hopefully all our Tuesday club riders will take part as well.
