Weekly Round Up
Last Saturday at Wednesfield we held the Midlands Grand Prix sponsored by Dash Trophies and hosted by Mr Dash Trophies himself, Mr Steve Mullinder. The starting line ups for both the Junior and Senior events held a wealth of talent so a good days racing was expected. Up first were the juniors with the likes of the Brinkoff brothers, Tyler and Lewis, Fraser Garnett, Coventry’s Cameron Gill & Tom, Horspath’s Will Jeffery plus Wednesfield’s own Tyler Bould and Owen Wells within the field the results were going to be tight. After some very tough, competitive, physical racing the winner of the 2019 series Grand Prix all came down to a run off between Ipswich’s Lewis Brinkoff and Poole’s Fraser Garnett. After 4 hard going laps Fraser took the win meaning Lewis finished in second followed by Horspath’s Will Jeffery taking the third spot. Next up were the seniors which was also predicted to be a well fought out affair with last years winner Josh Brooke making an appearance alongside Britain’s number two and three Ben Mould and Paul Heard fulfilled the line-up along with ever improving senior riders such as A&T’s Reece Pollit and Aces Tom Bewick; who did not shy away from the challenge. Some great racing was witnessed with numerous tape exclusions, crashes, many spectacular passes and in some respects some acrobatics this again resulted in Josh Brooke to take away the “newly cleaned!” Midlands Grand Prix trophy. Followed by Lukas Nowacki taking the second place with 17 points but it was the third spot which resulted in a three-way run off between Zac Payne, Paul Heard and Ben Mould with Zac coming out on top to complete the podium positions. The following day began the Midlands League races for the Aces as they took on rivals Birmingham. Division 3 saw new manager Georgia lead the foxes through the match to only loose by one point in one of the final heats after leading the whole match. Next up was Division one which was seen to be one of the biggest challenges for the aces for this season. After some very eventful, competitive racing the aces took the win 4 points clear of the monarchs. To finish a weekend full of racing on the Ashmore race way Aces division two side battled against the monarchs to finish 73(-7) to Birmingham’s 76 points well done all! This weekend we will see Wednesfield vs Coventry in a Midland League match on Sunday 17th starting with Division 3 at 1pm. Can all riders please be there for 12 to help set up! Last night we held our annual presentation night over at Corpus Christi. With many friendly faces there a very enjoyable night went ahead with lots of laughs and awards given out on the night including those for the Club Championships from the end of the 2018 season.
Bring on the 2019 season with many more awards to come! All pictures can be found on our Facebook group or within the gallery on this website... See you all soon for training... The year of 2018 for Wednesfield Aces…
After a very slow start to this year due to the bad weather many matches were cancelled but by April, we were on the way to a great new season for both our team and individual riders who all rode excellently through out this year. After all the bad weather the season finally began with the spring cup, an individual riders’ event which was held at Leicester by Ross Mee, with Under 12’s through to the women’s and vets’ aces riders did not let themselves down (all full results can be found on Facebook). After having some more bad weather the BYJL series began at Wednesfield for the first round and finishing the regional rounds at East Park later in the year. Some of our overall regional results included: Peter (U10s)- 5th Corey (U10s)- 3rd Ellis (U14s)- 2nd Megan (Girls)- 4th Georgia (Girls)- 1st Tyler(U18s)-1st May Bank Holiday saw all different clubs from both Britain and Poland come together at the Wolverhampton track of East Park to compete in the European Club Championships on the final day Wednesfield’s A team finished 3rd in Europe after some tough racing well done all! During these championships we also fielded a B team to which they also rode very well in the slotted qualifiers they rode in. The second of June held the Welsh open to which both Josh and Brandon rode well in with Josh finishing 3rd in the B and Brandon 2nd in the A final. Well done lads! Later in the month of June saw the British Club Championships up in the north although we did not enter as a team in any of the events that weekend the Burt sisters took to the A&Ts track in the Girls Pairs event. After lots of competitive racing even after pulling 4 7-3s they just missed out on the A final by one point. The 1st July brought the first round of the National BYJL series to which another four rounds all over the country took place finishing on the 1st September at Horspath with Aces final standing positions in the country were: Corey (U10’s)- 8th, Ellis (U14’s)- 4th , Tyler (U18’s)- 6th, Megan (Girls)- 9th and finally Georgia (Girls)- 4th. Later in the moth of July brought the Midlands Individual Championships to Birmingham with aces riders from the U15’s to the vets competed. Aces results included Tyler who finished 1st in the U15’s and then went onto taking the second place in the U18’s, Megan who finished 4th followed by Georgia finishing second after a run off for 1st in the Women’s event, The Open saw Aces Chris J who finish second alongside Lee and Tom but also Aces veteran riders Burtie and Graham racing too. Also, at home track we held a very successful open day welcoming member of the community to try out our sport but also raising nearly £200 for our club a huge well done and thank you goes out to everyone once again. August Bank holiday only meant one thing the British Individual Championships and what a weekend it was! Astley and Tyldesley opened the weekend with the youngsters racing with Aces Corey finishing in a well deserved joint 8th spot on 13 points in the Under 10’s little league championship. Next up was older sister Megan who rode in the tough Under 14 Girls line up respectively finishing 7th with her 10 points. Ending the first day Aces rider Ellis finished 5th in his first ever championship within the under 14 boys’ line up. Next day held seniors’ qualifiers with Paul, CJ, Lee and Tom all riding with Lee and Tom just missing out on their spots in the final. Alongside this over at Sheffield’s Cookson Park Georgia competed in the Under 16 girls’ event after leading a run off she took the third spot. Following this Aces Tyler took to the track in his first British final finishing in 10th place. The final day of the championships which were held at Hull, first up was the Under 16 Boys’ final where once more Tyler rode picking up 12 points after a fall. Next up was Georgia now riding in the Women’s event getting herself 11 points also after a bit of a fall. Ending the weekend was the Senior open final and after just missing out on a run off Chris finished in fourth place just behind team mate Paul who rode within the run off for second against Poole’s Ben Mould to take the third position. To finish youngsters national racing Ross Mee held an Open Invitational for the BYJL riders where the Burt riders represented the aces with Corey in the U10s finishing on a maximum of 16 points then went on to take the 1st in his A final. Later, was sisters Megan and Georgia with Megan winning her B final after scoring 8 points and Georgia placing second behind A&T’s Emily after scoring 13 points. Between all the other racing the Midlands League racing was held between clubs bringing some great team riding for all. As a result, our Division one side came out on top with division 2&3 still to be confirmed. Throughout the season there was some brilliant racing by all. Leading on to the end of the years knock out cup to which Wednesfield team once again made it through the regional play offs to ride nationally against new winners Poole and other clubs including Great Blakenham and A&T to which the aces team of Paul, CJ, Matt, Brandon, Lee, Tom, Harrie, Scott and Tyler finished second. New to this year’s fixtures gold cup matches were set up to which allowed 12-16 riders in with the action of the senior riders. After some more great racing our senior and junior riders can come away with smiles on their faces. Again, true results have yet to be confirmed. Another fixture which was added this year was the Midweek league with the Junior side only taking part in the home host one as they struggled to get all tea members to each fixture the senior side took part in some of them pulling up some good points. Other racing this year also included the Battle of Britain series where many of our riders took their places in the Midlands team. The Vets racing saw Wayne, Burtie, Graham, Phil and Andy to get a piece of some racing action over their Eurovets rounds where they all rode very well. Also running this year was the Women’s league where Aces Megan and Georgia were back on the scene representing the Midlands in their women’s team racing but also through the three individual rounds but also in the last round with Georgia alongside chosen team partner Alice finishing second to Gemma and Miah by one point to end the women’s league season. The 2018 season was very long, and jam packed with racing as you can see so enjoy your rest for now and we look forward to seeing you in the new year for our presentation evening to give out all this seasons awards including those from annual club championships. See you all soon! Yesterday we held the 6th round of the Eurovets series championships within the three categories Aces riders: Phil, Graham, Burtie, Wayne and Mick all went out and scored some well deserved points.
Burtie scoring 9 points to finish 2nd in the B final Wayne scoring 8 points Phil scored 14 points and then went on to finish 3rd in the Over 60's A final and 3rd in the Over 50's B final. Graham scoring 16 points where he finished 2nd in the Over 50's B final. Mick scored himself 10 points and finished 2nd in the Over 60's B final. Well done all! As I am sure that you are aware over the Bank Holiday Weekend it was a very busy time for lots of cycle speedway riders who took part in the British Individual Championships to try and earn themselves the title of being British Champion for 2018. A few of our own home riders were taking part in various events over the three days and here’s how they got on…
On Saturday the 26th it was a day for all the youngsters to have a go at competitive racing at Astley and Tyldesley cycle speedway club. First to represent Wednesfield was Corey who rode in the under 10’s little league Championship after picking up some second places and an unfortunate slip on his gate one CJ went and scored a brilliant 13 points against the strong 16 rider line up placing him in joint 8th place. Next up was older sister Megan who performed brilliantly against a tough Under 14 Girls line up. Megan went and scored a great 10 points which put her into 7th place. In the final event of the day Aces Ellis showed how he has greatly progressed over this season by taking part in the Under 14 boy’s event to which he placed second in each of his four races to put him in 5th place in his first British Championship event. Well done to all our youngsters. The second day of the British championships took place at a very wet Sheffield for some of the qualifiers for the open final the next day, the Under 16 Girl’s Final and the Junior Final. Also, on this very cold and wet Sunday over at Bury the Vets Over 40’s, 50’s and 60’s Finals took place along with the other semi- finals for the Open championship. After taking part in the two semi finals aces Paul and Chris were through to the Open Final the following day, with Lee just missing out and put as first reserve to which he pulled out of. Tom also gave the other seniors a challenge as he pushed through his semi-final, unfortunately not scoring enough points to go through to the final but still rode well in what was a tough draw. At the Cookson Park track the Under 16’s Girls took to the track to show some very close racing. After getting two seconds within her third race after a well-timed pass on Ipswich’s Gemma and Poole’s Anna Georgia scored a great 4 points and then placed second in her final race causing a three-way run off for the 3rd spot for this championship. With an unexpected pick of gate one Georgia went and lead the run off from the start with Gemma (Ipswich) and Leicester’s Sophia taking the 4th and 5th spots in the final. Following the girls, the Juniors final took place where Wednesfield’s Tyler stepped in for Ewan Hancox from Birmingham. Tyler went to score a great 10 points which put him in 10th place against the strong Junior line up especially as it was his first British Championship which he has competed in. Meanwhile, over at Bury where the Vet’s finals took place Over 60’s rider Phil took part in the Championship with the rain hammering down Phil still went to finish second in Britain. Well done all! Well what a very busy weekend it has been for the Aces. On Saturday we held a very successful open day where we saw members of the community who had never tried cycle speedway before giving it a go. Some of which we hope to see in the coming training nights. A tombola, BBQ, refreshments, guess the sweets in the jar, football card, cake and samosa sales all raised nearly £200 for the club so well done and thanks everyone who helped.
Sunday more action was seen on our track as we held the fifth round of the Supertrax Battle of Britain where Midlands vs the North and Scotland went head to head to score their regions vital points. Juniors finished 83-97 to the North. Seniors finishing 121-78 to the Midlands there was great racing by all. Aces Tyler played a big part in scoring points for the Midlands junior team as well as joining older aces members Paul Heard, Chris Jewkes and Lee Kemp in the Senior Midlands team. However, that’s not the only race action that took place yesterday as down in Norwich the 3rd round of the Women’s League took place. Although the Midlands where missing a few riders they didn’t let it get to them as all girls rode their best scoring points for the Midlands region. Aces Megan and Georgia both helping to pick up extra points in the team races. Next was the individual races where both the aces girls scored so very good points with Megan scoring 10 which placed her in the C final due to countback but still rode very well in her five-rider final and secured her the 3rd place. After scoring a great 13 points Georgia made it to her first A final of the Women’s League season and after picking the usual gate four and an unlucky slip which lost her the third place respectively finished fourth in the A. Well done everyone what a great weekend it has been now bring on next week for all our riders who are riding in the British finals to hopefully earn themselves the title as British Champion for the 2018 season we wish you all the best of luck. Well done to all riders at East Park today the results were......
Div 3 EP 43 - 47 Wed Div 1 EP 58 - 122 Wed Div 2 EP 62 - 86 Wed We also had a ML match against Coventry during the week with a win in Div 1 ( 109 - 68 ) and 2 and an excellent Div 3 where all the youngsters gave their all with a fantastic atmosphere but Coventry pipping us 74 - 76. Well in what was a very long day with sunshine, wind and cloud and finishing just in time before the rain we had 5 riders performing in today’s BYJL National round 3 at Coventry.
Corey was up first in the U10’s and after scoring an amazing 15 in his heats made the A final and was 4th. Ellis was in the U14’s where after an exclusion due to a fall gained a B final place and finished 1st. Onto the terrible twosome that are the Burt sisters, Megan finishing 2nd in the C the youngest out of the girls today and Georgia finished 1st in the B after a cracking gate 1 and leading the 4 laps. Tyler was up in the U18’s he felt he had a bit of a mare but was placed 3rd in the B after a sterling attempt. |
