On Saturday the 26th it was a day for all the youngsters to have a go at competitive racing at Astley and Tyldesley cycle speedway club. First to represent Wednesfield was Corey who rode in the under 10’s little league Championship after picking up some second places and an unfortunate slip on his gate one CJ went and scored a brilliant 13 points against the strong 16 rider line up placing him in joint 8th place. Next up was older sister Megan who performed brilliantly against a tough Under 14 Girls line up. Megan went and scored a great 10 points which put her into 7th place. In the final event of the day Aces Ellis showed how he has greatly progressed over this season by taking part in the Under 14 boy’s event to which he placed second in each of his four races to put him in 5th place in his first British Championship event. Well done to all our youngsters.
The second day of the British championships took place at a very wet Sheffield for some of the qualifiers for the open final the next day, the Under 16 Girl’s Final and the Junior Final. Also, on this very cold and wet Sunday over at Bury the Vets Over 40’s, 50’s and 60’s Finals took place along with the other semi- finals for the Open championship. After taking part in the two semi finals aces Paul and Chris were through to the Open Final the following day, with Lee just missing out and put as first reserve to which he pulled out of. Tom also gave the other seniors a challenge as he pushed through his semi-final, unfortunately not scoring enough points to go through to the final but still rode well in what was a tough draw. At the Cookson Park track the Under 16’s Girls took to the track to show some very close racing. After getting two seconds within her third race after a well-timed pass on Ipswich’s Gemma and Poole’s Anna Georgia scored a great 4 points and then placed second in her final race causing a three-way run off for the 3rd spot for this championship. With an unexpected pick of gate one Georgia went and lead the run off from the start with Gemma (Ipswich) and Leicester’s Sophia taking the 4th and 5th spots in the final. Following the girls, the Juniors final took place where Wednesfield’s Tyler stepped in for Ewan Hancox from Birmingham. Tyler went to score a great 10 points which put him in 10th place against the strong Junior line up especially as it was his first British Championship which he has competed in. Meanwhile, over at Bury where the Vet’s finals took place Over 60’s rider Phil took part in the Championship with the rain hammering down Phil still went to finish second in Britain. Well done all!
